Natural Environmental Training Uses Naturalistic Teaching Strategies to Promote Learning
Natural Environmental Training (NET) is an evidence-based intervention approach used at Norfolk Autism Center to target behavioral development that impacts other behaviors. This innovative approach works in conjunction with the other therapeutic methods we utilize in your child’s custom therapy plans.
NET is a Unique Approach to ASD Treatment
Unlike Discrete Trail Training which focuses on breaking down complex behaviors into more manageable parts, NET focuses on teaching your child new skills within the natural environment where they typically live and play.
We use your child’s interests and motivations and lots of positive reinforcement with elements your child chooses to increase your child’s motivation to learn.
How does NET Work?
Let’s say a therapist is working with a child named Alex, who has autism spectrum disorder (ASD), to improve his communication skills. Alex enjoys playing with toy cars and often gets excited when he sees them.
During an NET session, the therapist might start by placing several toy cars on a table within Alex’s reach. Instead of directly instructing Alex to label the cars or requesting him to say specific words, the therapist waits for Alex to show interest or initiate communication about the cars.
When Alex points to a car or looks at it with interest, the therapist responds enthusiastically, reinforcing Alex’s behavior by saying, “Wow, you found the red car! That’s awesome!” The therapist might also model language by saying, “Car! Yes, that’s a car!”
As Alex continues to show interest in the cars, the therapist gradually introduces more opportunities for communication, such as asking open-ended questions (“Which car do you like best?”) or offering choices (“Do you want the red car or the blue car?”). Each time Alex communicates or attempts to communicate, the therapist provides positive reinforcement, such as praise, access to preferred toys, or a high-five.
Throughout the session, the therapist closely observes Alex’s responses and adjusts the level of support and reinforcement based on his reactions and progress. By targeting pivotal areas like motivation, self-initiation, and social communication within the context of Alex’s interests, NET aims to promote generalized improvements in his communication skills that extend beyond the therapy session and into other areas of his life.
Distinct Benefits of NET in Treatment for Your Child with Autism
Natural Environmental Training offers numerous benefits for families with kids on the autism spectrum, making NET an effective and valuable intervention approach.
Here are some key benefit areas for this therapy approach:
Increased Engagement of Your Child
By capitalizing on your child’s natural interests, we increase the active participation in the therapy activities by your child. Elements of choice and lots of positive reinforcement makes it fun for your child to learn new skills and repeat positive behaviors, naturally reducing less desirable behaviors over time.
Promotion of Communication
Communication skills are foundational for learning and interpersonal interactions. Without good communication, kids struggle to understand instructions, can’t effectively communicate their needs or preferences, and may not engage in meaningful interactions with other people. Poor communication skills also lead to frustration and anxiety which results in tantrums, aggression, or withdrawal by your child as the primary way of expressing themselves.
Promotion of Social Interactions
Children with autism and significant communication challenges may struggle to make friends, to initiate and sustain a conversation, and to interpret social cues, all impacting their social development and well-being. Strong social interactions increase your child’s self-esteem and independence and allows them to achieve their goals.
Empowerment of Parents
NET teaches parents practical skills and techniques you can use in everyday situations. For example, you learn how to create natural opportunities for your child to practice communication, social skills, and adaptive behaviors during routine activities like mealtime, play, and errands. And you gain a deeper understanding of your child’s learning processes.
