How Autism Testing Works for Children

September 25, 2025
We believe every child deserves an accurate autism diagnosis

Norfolk Autism Center does not perform diagnostic testing. We do require a formal autism diagnosis before starting ABA therapy. We are happy to share referrals to local diagnostic specialists in Hampton Roads. If you need referrals now, contact us.

Step 1: Developmental screening

Pediatricians screen for autism at 18 and 24 months during well visits. This follows guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Learn more about screening at the CDC and AAP.

A common tool is the M-CHAT-R/F. Parents answer questions about play, pointing, and social response. See the official M-CHAT-R/F site.

Step 2: Comprehensive diagnostic evaluation

If screening raises concern, your child is referred for a full evaluation. This is done by specialists such as developmental pediatricians or child psychologists. The team reviews history, observes behavior, and uses standardized tools. The goal is to decide if your child meets DSM-5 criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder. See the CDC’s overview of ASD diagnosis and DSM-5.

Common tools used

  • ADOS-2. A structured play or conversation session that measures social communication and restricted behaviors. Read more from Mass General’s Lurie Center.
  • ADI-R. A detailed caregiver interview on early development and current skills. See Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s ADI-R overview.

Evaluations often include speech and language testing, cognitive testing, hearing checks, and medical review. Some children are referred for genetic testing when clinically indicated. See summary guidance in American Family Physician.

Step 3: Results and next steps

Your clinician explains results and gives a written report. If ASD is diagnosed, the report lists strengths, support needs, and recommendations. Families can start therapy and request school supports.

Medical diagnosis vs school eligibility in Virginia

A medical diagnosis is not the same as special education eligibility. Schools run their own multidisciplinary evaluation under IDEA and Virginia rules. Learn how eligibility works at the Virginia Department of Education and the state’s page on Autism eligibility.
